Location: Algeria (officially called the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria) is a country in northern Africa. Algeria is bordered by Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya, Tunisia, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Capital: Algiers is the capital of Algeria.

Size: Algeria covers about 2,381,741 square kilometers (about 3.5 as big as the state of Texas). Algeria is the 11th largest country in the world.

Population: The people of Algeria are called Algerians. Algeria has the 35th largest population of any country in the world (after China, India, USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, and Bangladesh). The population of Algeria is about 34,586,184 (as of July, 2010).

Government: Algeria is a federal republic that is divided into 48 provinces. Algeria's national holiday is Revolution Day, celebrated on November 1 (Algeria became independent from France on November 1, 1954).

Language: The official language is Arabic. Other languages include French and Berber dialects.

Education: Girls and boys in Algeria go to school for an average of 13 years.

Literacy Rate: About 69.9% (over two-thirds) of the adults in Algeria can read and write. About 79.6% of the men and 60.1% of the women are literate.

Religion: Sunni Muslim (the official state religion) 99%, Christian and Jewish 1%.

Algeria's FlagAlgeria's Flag: Algeria's flag has two equal vertical bands of green and white (green is by the flagpole); in the center of the flag is a red crescent and a smaller, red, five-pointed star located within the crescent. The crescent and star, and the color green are traditional symbols of Islam (which is the official religion of Algeria). The color white symbolizes purity. The Algerian flag has a ratio of 2:3 (height to width).

Algeria's flag was adopted on July 3, 1962, after Algeria became independent from France.

Climate: Algeria is arid to semiarid; mild, wet winters with hot, dry summers along coast; drier with cold winters and hot summers on high plateau; sirocco is a hot, dust/sand-laden wind especially common in summer.

Major Rivers: Only seasonal rivers, near the coast.

Terrain/Mountain Ranges: mostly high plateau and desert; some mountains; narrow, discontinuous coastal plain.

Highest Point: The highest point in Algeria is Tahat, which is 3,003 m above sea level; it is located in southeastern Algeria.

Lowest Point: The lowest point in Algeria is Chott Melrhir, at 40 m below sea level; it is located in northeastern Algeria.

Natural Resources: petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, phosphates, uranium, lead, zinc.

Major Industries: petroleum, natural gas, light industries, mining, electrical, petrochemical, food processing.

Agricultural Products: wheat, barley, oats, grapes, olives, citrus, fruits; sheep, cattle.
