Location: Libya (officially called the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya) is a country in northern Africa. Libya is bordered by Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Algeria, Tunisia, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Capital: Tripoli is the capital of Libya.

Size: Libya covers about 1,759,540 square kilometers (slightly bigger than the state of Alaska). Libya is the 17th largest country in the world.

Population: The people of Libya are called Libyans. Libya has the 101st largest population of any country in the world. The population of Libya is about 6,597,960 (as of July, 2010).

Government: Libya is an authoritarian state that is divided into 22 states. Libya's national holiday is Revolution Day, celebrated on September 1.

Language: The official language is Arabic. Other languages include Italian and English.

Education: Girls and boys in Libya go to school for an average of 17 years.

Literacy Rate: About 82.6% (over eight tenths) of the adults in Libya can read and write. About 92.4% of the men and 72% of the women are literate.

Religion: Islam -- Sunni Muslim (the official state religion) 97%, other 3%.

Libya's FlagLibya's Flag: Libya's flag is a red, black, and green horizontal tricolor with a white crescent and star in the center. The flag replaced the all-green Libyan flag on February 27, 2011; it has been the flag of the Kingdom of Libya from 1951 to 1969.

Libya's previous flag was a field of green. The color green is traditional symbol of Islam (which is the official religion of Libya). It was the only monochromatic (consisting of one color) flag in the world. Libya's old flag was adopted on November 11, 1977, when Libya became independent after leaving the Federation of Arab Republics (which consisted of Libya, Egypt and Syria).

Climate: Mediterranean along coast; dry, extreme desert interior. The highest temperature on Earth, 57.8 °C or 136.0 °F, was recorded on September 13, 1922, at the town of Al 'Aziziyah (located Southwest of Tripoli).

Major Rivers: No natural rivers. The Great Man-Made River (GMR), the world's largest irrigation project, is a network of pipes that supplies water from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System fossil aquifer (deep underground water that is a remnant of the last Ice Age).

Terrain/Mountain Ranges: mostly barren, flat to undulating plains, plateaus, depressions. Up to 90% of the land is covered by desert.

Highest Point: The highest point in Libya is Bikku Bitti, which is 2,267 m above sea level; it is located in southeastern Libya along the border with Chad.

Lowest Point: The lowest point in Libya is Sabkhat Ghuzayyil, at 47 m below sea level; it is located in northern Libya near the Gulf of Sidra.

Natural Resources: Petroleum, natural gas, gypsum.

Major Industries: Petroleum, petrochemicals, aluminum, iron and steel, food processing, textiles, handicrafts, cement.

Agricultural Products: Wheat, barley, olives, dates, citrus, vegetables, peanuts, soybeans; cattle.
