Location: Somalia is a country in eastern Africa (located on the horn of Africa). Somalia is bordered by Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The equator passes through southern Somalia.

Capital: Mogadishu is the capital of Somalia.

Major Cities: Mogadishu (the capital), Hargeysa, Berbera, Kisimayo, Marka.

Size: Somalia covers about 637,657 square kilometers (slightly smaller than the state of Texas). Somalia is the 43rd largest country in the world.

Population: The people of Somalia are called Somalians. Somalia has the 82nd largest population of any country in the world. The population of Somalia is about 10,112,453 (as of July, 2010).

Government: Somalia has no permanent national government. It is divided into 18 divisions. The national holiday is Foundation of the Somali Republic Day which is celebrated on July 1 (1960).

Language: The official language is Somali. Other languages include Arabic, Italian, and English.

Education: unknown.

Literacy Rate: About 37.8% (a bit over one-third) of the adults in Somalia can read and write. About 49.7% of the men and 25.8% of the women are literate.

Religion: Sunni Muslim.

Somalia's FlagSomalia's Flag: Somalia's flag has a light blue bfield with a white, five-pointed star in the center. The blue field was originally chosen to be like the flag of the UN, but now is said to symbolize the sky and the Indian Ocean. The five points of the star represent the five regions inhabited by Somali people in Somalia and nearby regions of the horn of Africa: the former British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland (which together make up Somalia), Djibouti, Ogaden (Ethiopia), and the Northern Frontier District (Kenya)

Climate: Somalia is mostly desert.

Terrain/Mountain Ranges: Mostly flat to undulating plateau rising to hills in north

Highest Point: The highest point in Somalia is Shimbiris, which is 2,416 m above sea level; it is located in northern Somalia near the Gulf of Aden.

Lowest Point: The lowest point in Somalia is the Indian Ocean, at sea level.

Natural Resources: Uranium and largely unexploited reserves of iron ore, tin, gypsum, bauxite, copper, salt, natural gas, likely oil reserves.

Major Industries: a few light industries, including sugar refining, textiles, wireless communication.

Agricultural Products: bananas, sorghum, corn, coconuts, rice, sugarcane, mangoes, sesame seeds, beans; cattle, sheep, goats; fish.
