The Titanic was a luxury ocean liner that sank on its first voyage. This huge ship was almost 900 feet (269 meters) long and had been advertised as "unsinkable."

On the night of April 14, 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg as it was sailing in the North Atlantic Ocean. The ship had been traveling from Britain to the USA. Within a few hours, the ship sank, killing about 1,500 people. Most of them drowned in the cold water because there weren't nearly enough lifeboats for everyone. Only 705 people survived the accident.

In 1985, oceanographers found the remains of the Titanic on the ocean floor using sonar and a remote-control submarine. The giant ship had broken in half as it sank, and the two halves now rest hundreds of feet apart with debris scattered between the front and the back.
