Minuend - Subtrahend Difference

Subtracting:
In subtraction, you start on the right (the ones column), and subtract each column in turn until you are done (subtracting the tens column, then the hundreds column, etc.).

Borrowing:
In a column, if the digit you are subtracting (in the subtrahend) is bigger than the digit you are subtracting from (in the minuend), you have to borrow a one from the next column to the left (the borrowed digit is a ten in the column to the right). When you "borrow" from the digit to the left, you decrease that digit by one.

When you borrow from a digit, what you are doing is breaking that digit into two parts, the 'digit minus one' and the number 'one' (together they add up to the number). The 'digit minus one' part remains in place. The 'one' is added to the column to its right, but in that column, it is worth ten.

Checking Your Answers:
After you have solved a subtraction problem, you check your work by adding your answer to the subtrahend. This should equal the minuend. For example:

10 -2 8	8 + 2 10
