Earth - the planet on which we live. Moon - the natural satellite of the Earth. Penumbra - the area in which the shadow of an object (in this case, the Earth on the moon) is partial. Sun - the star in our Solar System. Umbra - the area in which the shadow of an object (in this case, the Earth on the moon) is total. When the entire moon is in the Earth's umbra, we experience a total lunar eclipse. When part of the moon is in the Earth's umbra, we experience a partial lunar eclipse. |
